NEWSLETTERS FOR MEMBERS
27th January 2008

This week's Newsletter is sponsored by Lafour Dance & Drama - seeking more
teachers in a number of UK locations.

The DTOL Shop now has one more Guy Dearden CD available - National
Variations 1:
32 tracks. High quality stereo recordings, without vocals, of genuine or
especially composed folk music from 22 countries. Musical instruments from
various parts of the world are digitally reproduced on the keyboard and
carefully mixed to capture the sound of folk musicians playing in their own
country. Ideal for national festival dances or show work.
AND I have added sample tracks to the detail pages of all Guy Dearden CDs,
so that you can hear something of what a CD (or a set of CDs such as
Showtime Hits 1 through 13) contains.
Further details of these products, and others, can be seen from the DTOL
Shop web pages:

Those of you who have been members of DTOL for some time will know that I
always encourage students - especially dance students - to know more about
dance and dance teaching. And I ask DTOL members to help, too. Here is one
such request:
Leanne Harrison (leanneharrison69@hotmail.com)
from Norwich, UK is "a student at Norwich City College. I am currently
studying my BTEC diploma in dance and was wondering if you could answer some
questions for me.
1.What is your typical day like? 2.What is your favourite part of the job?
3.What is your least favourite part of the job? 4.How did you know you
wanted to pursue this career? 5.How did you get to become a dance teacher?
6.What advice would you give to some one who wanted to also become a dance
teacher? 7.What dance qualifications do you need? 8. What does your CV look
like? (Is it full?) 9. What is the average pay for a dance teacher? (Minimum
and maximum)? 10. Is there much competition? Why did you pick the age group
you teach?"
Please spare a few minutes to email Leanne if you can and help her with her
studies, by giving brief answers to some or all of her questions. Thank you.

I'm aware that not many members use the DTOL Forum but I thought I should
remind you of its existence!
The Forum is at
www.dtol.ndirect.co.uk/forum.htm
and has a password: teachingdance (case-sensitive)
Feel free to use it!
There's also a Members' Map at
www.dtol.ndirect.co.uk/guestmap.htm
There's no password for the map. There are currently 415 DTOL members shown
in their geographical locations. It's just a bit of fun - you can go and
"stick your pin" on the map.
I would also like to remind members that this newsletter is for you -
ideally the content comes from members, not from me!
If you have any comments or questions which you think will interest members,
or discussion topics you'd like to introduce, feel free to email me with the
details.

DTOL member Karen Shiel (shineydancer@hotmail.co.uk)
from Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, UK responded to last week's item from Canada
about dance exams being counted as school credits:
"I am a British Theatre Dance Association (BTDA) teacher and our exams are
already classed as part of the education system. If you are teaching them
within a state school the school gets credit for them towards their scores.
and also they are recognised as qualifications for example one of my girls
did not get enough GCSE's to get onto the A level course she wanted (dance)
although she has danced since the age of three however as soon as she showed
her BTDA grade 5 certificated she had enough as they are in the same level
as GCSE, her friend who goes to another dance school which do not have
recognised qualification exams did not get in. what a shame so many parents
are wasting their money paying for exams which a lot of the time are not
recognised by the education system I would like all parents to question
their child dance teacher about what they are paying for.
(I believe that RAD exams and some ITDA exams are also recognised but BTDA
are the only ones to have tap modern jazz classical ballet lyrical and acro
as part of the national frame work of qualifications) should you require any
further information check www.btda.org.uk"

There are some slightly iffy-looking requests this week; I can't tell
whether all such requests are genuine. Be careful when replying!

Christy Lawrence (christylawrence5@gmail.com)
is from South Pittsburg, TN:
"My 17 year-old daughter is going to be in Junior Miss on March 8th and
would like some help with her dance routine. She has taken dance in the
past, some ballet, jazz, and is a very good dancer. She is a cheerleader and
can pick up moves quickly. Is there someone that could help her?"
Kim Cramer (kwc3961@aol.com) from
Daniel Island, SC is a "52 yr. old woman that would like to learn to dance.
I love watching Dancing with the Stars". I'm not quiet sure where I need to
start. I've always wanted to learn to dance. I could use the exercise too."

Maria J. Beltran de Heredia (mjbeltran_de_heredia@hotmail.com)
from Edinburgh, UK is "looking for adult classical ballet classes in Galway,
Ireland. I would appreciate any information you could give me. Thank you."
Basak Daylan Hendry (basak.daylan@valentia-group.com)
is from Yenikoy, Istanbul, Turkey:
"My husband and I would like to take private tuitions on ball room dancing
and also maybe Argentinean tango. I would appreciate if you could get back
to me on my email and then we can discuss the details. Thank you."
Alexandra (doux70@mail.ru) from Moscow,
Russia needs "your advice very much! I'm mad over the dance. I've started to
dance at 17. Now I'm 23 years old. Unfortunately I don't have a very rich
ballet background (experience), but I have a very strong will to study it.
Very soon I'm going to move to Paris and I want to continue to study ballet
and other styles of dance there. But the problem is: I know that mostly
there are serious selections during the auditions (ballet technique) and I
may not pass it through because my ballet skill is not high enough. But I'm
ready and inspired to study hard to reach advanced level. I'd be very
thankful to you if you could advice me some good academy or school in Paris,
where I'd be accepted and I'd be taught with a professional approach without
big entrance contests. (Professional approach is very important condition
because I want and need to progress in dance.) Thank you very much for your
time and advices!"
Iagoba Emeka Adimora (jagobaemeka@hotmail.com)
is from Galway, Ireland:
"I am Iagoba's mummy, and we are looking for a group of Iagoba's age that
learns ballet and likes music likes music like him. He is 5 years all and I
would like for him to have a taste of ballet and others. We live in Galway
and hoping to fine a nice teacher soon. "

THIS WEEK'S NEW DTOL MEMBERS
The reason for listing new members each week is to foster DTOL's community.
I hope that, from time to time, you will find a DTOL member in your area, or
who is teaching your specialism in another area, and you will want to make
contact with them, to share experiences. That's what DTOL's all about! But
the listing is also a "welcome" to the new members. Perhaps you can take a
minute this week to email one of these members to welcome them to DTOL.
The second line in each case is what each member says about themselves.
