NEWSLETTERS FOR MEMBERS

2nd March 2008

*****************************************************
This week's newsletter is sponsored by Jill Bridger from Melody Movement Early Learning. Email jill@melodymovement.com for a Melody Bear and Melody Movement Teacher catalogue.

*****************************************************
DTOL member Suzanne Perdue (SPDanceCtr@aol.com) from Marlborough, MA, USA reports "a serious problem that we studio owners/teachers have traced back to your teaching listings. If you go to www.strippinaerobics.com you'll see a list of names of people who "supposedly" teach this. There are people who haven't taught in MA for 5 years but listed on your website. It's in many states. The teachers/owners are outraged and disgusted to be on this site. We DO believe the webmaster got the list from DTOL. I think something has to be changed. He has emailed people back with horrible words, insulted them, said he has enough money to keep it in the courts for years and years, and if you go to the website you'll see a disgusting term used at the top of the page.

Here's my listing I found on Google! Striptease Studios in Massachusetts - Aerobics & Lessons Ms. Suzanne Perdue, Former professional dancer. Suzanne Perdue Dance Center. 847 Edgell Road, Framingham, MA 01701. Tel: (508)877-6211 email: ... www.strippinaerobics.com/strip_tease_massachusetts.htm - 19k - Cached - Similar pages

Here's the link that lists the studios by state: http://www.strippinaerobics.com/strip_tease_aerobics_studios.htm

Please contact them! Please put something in your newsletter. Thanks. Suzanne"

I replied:

"This is one of the main reasons for my automating the listings recently. There are no longer any static web pages with members' listings. The listings are generated afresh each time a site visitor requests details for a particular country/state. The underlying database is strongly protected from unauthorised access. The misuse you report is almost certainly from old web pages, as you say.

Of course, it is possible for anyone to request listings for a country/state and, when the listings appear, to copy and paste the data and use it elsewhere. This is no different from doing so from Yellow Pages or other sources.

In the end, there is no getting away from the fact that the whole point of DTOL is to get dance teachers' information into the public domain, with as wide an audience as possible, so as to attract genuine customers. As with any advertising, there is a risk that the information provided will be misused.

I'm sorry your data has been misused in such a way and I will draw this to the attention of members in the newsletter."

Edith Chi (janjung@hkbn.net) from Tuen Mun, Hong Kong asks:
"My spine has a little pain sometimes. Will it affect my ballet dance or easy to injure during practicing?"

A reminder of the latest addition to the DTOL Shop. I believe some members have already used the excellent CDs produced by Richard Maddock.

A native of Ontario, Canada, Richard Maddock has accompanied dancers for over twenty years, and has worked as a dance class and exam accompanist at numerous dance schools, including: Joyce Turley's School of Dance; The Art of Dance; Dancespace; and The Randolph Academy. Mr. Maddock currently holds the position of Head Accompanist at The Pia Bouman School of Creative Movement and Ballet, in Toronto, Canada.

Richard has most recently composed the music syllabus for Level 2, Level 3, and Level 4 for a new dance syllabus entitled Living Dance, which was created by Beth Baudistel in Australia which will soon become available to dance studios.

In addition to his work as an accompanist, Richard's performance experience also includes work as a keyboardist and vocalist for many Top 40 bands, including the "Relics" and "Off the Wall." His work can also be heard on singer/songwriter Lorna Vallings' CD "Confidential," as well as on Herb Walsh's CD "Hot Pies -- Man Next Door."

There are two "Ballet Studio Inspirations" CDs for class work and a series of three "As Creation Unfolds" CDs which are "fully orchestrated with many different instrumentations and wonderful for choreographic work or creative movement classes. These CDs have a wide variety of unique styles and arrangements."

Richard quotes these appreciative DTOL members, amongst others:

"I found Richard Maddock's classroom CDs to be compelling, supportive and constantly interesting music. The recording is lovely and rich in expressiveness... a teacher's delight, a student's inspiration ... and you can quote me on that!"

- Sharon Pinsley - Teacher/Choreographer - Israel

"Richard Maddock's CD Ballet Studio Inspirations: Volume 1 lives up to its name and is truly inspiring. It was like a breath of fresh air teaching to this wonderful music. My students and teachers can't wait till we receive Richard's next CD."

- Alisa Finney - Gay Wightman School of Ballet - Melbourne, Australia

"The CDs are AWESOME & the students are really enjoying the new class work I have set to your class music. Thank you so much for these. They are wonderful & very inspirational."

- Noeleyne Wilson - The Ballet School - Perth, Australia

Kellie (kelliegirl826@aol.com) from Belmont, North Carolina is "interested in a recreational dance class on Saturday morning schedule. I cannot find anything that fits these criteria on the net. If anyone knows of such classes please email me back ASAP. Thank you!"

Sarah Crews-Rogers (beebaphone@comcast.net) from Chattanooga, Tennessee "grew up in Cape Town, South Africa and was instructed in the Royal Academy of ballet. I was instructed in Cecchetti the last year that I was there and did not continue my dance career after we moved to the United States at the age of ten. We went through formal examination processes each year and I did not realize that it was not the case all over the world for ballet students to have routine exams.

In fact, I live in Chattanooga, Tennessee and I am intending for my daughter to be instructed in ballet. She is three and has started a creative movement class with a company called Ballet Tennessee. They do not have a specific style of ballet and do not use a formal exam process to progress students, although the company is known to be the best available. This is really confusing to me. No one in Chattanooga instructs in one particular style. Will this be okay? I am fearful of wasting time and money on less than adequate instruction. What should I look for?"
