Dance Teachers On-Line
NEWSLETTERS FOR MEMBERS
20th April 2008
*****************************************************
This week's newsletter is sponsored by Mandy Fouracre LRAD B Phil (Hons),
author of the Lafour Prima Dance syllabus
*****************************************************
DTOL member April Marin (a.r.martin@ntlworld.com)
from Cambridgeshire, UK emailed me this week:
"I seem to be getting a lot of these and I am not sure they are genuine,
each claims to be ok but I am not so sure and I would like to know where
they got my details since this email is not the one I use for my work but my
default one. Have other teachers had these as well?
The email in question is from the Conseil International de la Danse CID and
is headed "22nd World Congress on Dance Research Athens, Greece, 2-6 July
2008".
As I said in my response to April:
"I mentioned this organisation in the newsletters in February 2006.
As far as I know it is a genuine organisation but I did identify a problem
with them at the time and have not posted any of the information they have
sent out since then.
I'll mention it in the next newsletter, to see whether other members have
views or are CID members.
I don't know where they get emails from but it's unlikely it could be DTOL,
given that the new automated pages aren't stored in a form which can be
trawled."
If you are a member of the organisation or have information about it, please
let me know and I'll publish your response in the next newsletter.

DTOL member Suzanne Ryan (reachdance@yahoo.com)
from Iowa, USA asks "I'm interested in knowing how teachers in different
countries address student's weight. Having been a professional dancer in
companies where directors said "girls, keep your weight down" I have seen
eating disorders flourish. I also know that some dance companies don't care
if their dancers are a variety of sizes, while others do. Is this also the
case outside of the United States?"
Any views from members?

SPONSOR'S SECTION
The 2008 spring break in the south of the UK is finishing with a spate of
cold weather a feature of which is a rather chilling easterly wind. In a
moment of optimism I am hoping that the spring which hasn't quite sprung
will be the herald of a warm and sunny summer to come?!
School holidays are often the only time when teachers can reflect a little
on the events of the term that has ended as well as preparing for the new
term ahead.
In my experience it is not uncommon for teachers to feel a little
dissatisfied with a particular aspect of their own teaching or an area of
their school which is not quite working. Identifying the area of weakness
can sometimes prove illusive and organising and investigating a solution
takes energy and time neither of which are in surplus when teaching full
time or part-time and bringing up a family or both!
The Lafour Prima Dance syllabus has led me to speak to many teachers who
have been dissatisfied with the programme that they (or teachers employed by
them) have been teaching to their younger students. Teaching one system for
many years can become tedious and uninspiring. Often the dissatisfaction
rumbles for quite a long time and when a teacher calls to enquire about the
Prima Dance syllabus I sense a relief that they have finally voiced their
concerns as well as an excitement about seeking an alternative.
Adopting a new method takes effort but the results can be so beneficial. It
is hugely rewarding when I receive feedback from teachers with comments such
as, 'I use the Lafour Prima Dance system every day for my pre-school
children and they love it.'
I think it is true to say that if the children are happy, the teacher is
happy and, importantly, so are the parents.
For teachers who have perhaps been in the 'dissatisfaction stage' for a
while do give me a ring or email to discuss how the Lafour Prima Dance
syllabus is structured and how its introduction could benefit you and your
school.
Newly qualified teachers, teachers new to teaching dance to the younger age
group or nursery teachers in schools may also be interested in a workshop on
the Lafour Prima Dance syllabus which can be arranged at the teacher's work
premises.
Wishing you all a successful term ahead with, I hope, some long, sunny,
summer days.

THIS WEEK'S NEW DTOL MEMBERS
The reason for listing new members each week is to foster DTOL's community.
I hope that, from time to time, you will find a DTOL member in your area, or
who is teaching your specialism in another area, and you will want to make
contact with them, to share experiences. That's what DTOL's all about! But
the listing is also a "welcome" to the new members. Perhaps you can take a
minute this week to email one of these members to welcome them to DTOL.
The second line in each case is what each member says about themselves.
