NEWSLETTERS FOR MEMBERS

4th May 2008

*****************************************************
This week's newsletter is sponsored by Tap attack, an amalgamation of some of the most innovative tap dancers, teachers and choreographers from all over the world. We bring a variety of styles, techniques and continually push the boundaries in all forms of tap dance.

*****************************************************
One of DTOL's members emailed me to say she had received an email which apparently originated from the email address which I use to send emails - ....@btconnect.com (I'm not quoting the whole address for reasons which will be obvious).

This email address is one which doesn't appear on any DTOL web pages. I use it only to send emails (such as this newsletter). Therefore, the only way in which anyone can receive an email which apparently originates from the address is if someone (possibly a DTOL member) has it in their address book and has a virus/worm which is accessing their address book and sending emails.

So, if you receive a junk email which appears to be from this email address - it isn't from me!

And if you have this address in your address book, please make sure you have anti-virus software which is up to date! Thank you, everyone.

I am currently undertaking a review of the items available in the DTOL Shop and the purchasing process.

Old items will be returning - Ross Alley Promotions products will shortly be available again - and new items included. More news next week.

The main change in purchasing will be that prices will be quoted in GBP. Obviously you will still be able to pay through PayPal. The new arrangement will mean that PayPal will take care of currency conversion, rather than me having to keep up to date with exchange rates. The UK pound has been moving over the past few months and some prices currently on the US and other non-UK shop pages haven't reflected the changes.

This change shouldn't really affect purchasers at all, in that you will still be able to buy class music CDs and other items at reasonable prices, using PayPal,

DTOL member Avatāra Ayuso (avatara.ayuso@gmail.com) from London, UK has a question abut rates of pay for teaching:

"I have an important question concerning the rates to teach.

I've been on contract with .... Company [Ed: name of dance company deleted] until now. Now that it is finished, they offer me a few teachings (for teenagers) in June, but they offer me just £15 [Ed: this is about USD 30, CAD 30, EUR 19, etc.]!

I really think this is not really well paid for a professional dancer and teacher as I am. The thing is that I don't know very well the rates for teaching here in London. Last time I taught a class as a guest teacher in the company and they paid me £35.

Now I have suggested to them, I'm not going to accept that amount because I don't think this is a proper minimum but I don't know if there is an actual minimum. So I would like to know if you could help me to find out if there is a minimum that I can negotiate. Tomorrow they want me to re-negotiate and I immediately thought of you and your services to help me in this matter.

Many thanks in advance."

Can anyone help Avatāra with some practical advice? If you email Avatāra, please copy to me, so that I can publish members' responses in the next newsletter.

SPONSOR'S SECTION

Tap Attack

Tap attack is an amalgamation of some of the most innovative tap dancers, teachers and choreographers from all over the world. We bring a variety of styles, techniques and continually push the boundaries in all forms of tap dance. Our next workshop is 11th May in London, we still have places available so please contact us at www.tapattack.co.uk to book your place.

Formed in 2006 by Jo Scanlan and Dean Magri with a vision of providing tap dancers opportunities to experience different styles and have exposure to current trends. Traveling to different towns and cities so far to date Tap Attack have taught classes to more than 400 people. Tap Attack workshops are inclusive to all ages although guidelines are set for 10 years and over. On the day dancers are able to participate in up to 4 workshops (1 with each teacher), a unique way to gain experience in different styles. The workshops were designed with the concept that it would not be just for dancers that lived in London but for all parts of the UK. Past workshops have taken part in Bristol, Birmingham, Reading (so far visiting each venue twice) and Liverpool. May's workshop will return once again to London.

We also travel further afield as part of our "tap attack world" where we have delivered workshops across Europe.

Our 2008 teaching faculty includes some of the leading dance figures in the tap industry - Junior Laniyan, Tarik Winston, Bret Jones, Graeme Henderson, Nick Yeoman, James Doubtfire, Jamie Read, Ian Waller, Jason Di Mascio and of course the founders Jo and Dean.

Jo's tap training has been accelerated by the 3 scholarships she has been awarded allowing her to study extensively in the USA with amongst others Heather Cornell & Manhattan Tap Company, Dr Henry Le Tang, Dr Bunny Briggs as well as taking many classes with the like of Fayard Nicholas, Jason Samuels Smith, Arthur Duncan, Dick Van Dyke and Jim Taylor.

She currently teaches at some of the leading vocational colleges including London Studio Centre, Italia Conti, Sylvia Young, Bird College.

Dean has appeared in many shows most notably Tap Dogs and Hot Shoe Shuffle, Steel City and Re-Booted. He has toured the world as a tap dancer and now guest teaches at many vocational colleges.

Next workshops dates are -

11th May - Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, London
29th June - Filton College (Wise Campus), Bristol

The rest of our 2008 events will be confirmed shortly.

THIS WEEK'S NEW DTOL MEMBERS

The reason for listing new members each week is to foster DTOL's community. I hope that, from time to time, you will find a DTOL member in your area, or who is teaching your specialism in another area, and you will want to make contact with them, to share experiences. That's what DTOL's all about! But the listing is also a "welcome" to the new members. Perhaps you can take a minute this week to email one of these members to welcome them to DTOL.

The second line in each case is what each member says about themselves.
