DTOL member Karen Stringer (DancingShmoo@hotmail.com)
from Cambridge, UK responded to Sandra Restell's question about the legal
issues surrounding the use of recorded/ downloaded music for classes and
performances:
"In the case of performances, most the theatres and venues have blanket
licences to cover the use of any recorded music and they pay a nominal fee
to the Performing Rights Society. A lot of halls where classes are held also
have this licence. When you hire a theatre you should ask the management
what their position is. Some places require no details of the music used and
some require a list of the recordings used."

DTOL member Dara Mistry (dara1938@gmail.com)
from Karnataka, India responded to Jill Gregory's question about dance
floors:
I am quite surprised that the question even arose about the use of sand on a
wooden dance floor. This is an absolute no-no. As Jill says, sand is an
abrasive. The word sandpaper is self-descriptive. Sweeping the sand will
definitely leave scar marks on the floor, which will deteriorate in a very
short span of time. Most dance schools which have wooden floors insist on
students bringing their dance shoes separately and changing into them before
coming onto the dance floor, and that too after ensuring that there is no
dirt, etc., on the soles. So, sand is definitely out. Jill should stand her
ground."

A UK dance teacher emailed DTOL to ask:
"Last year I gained a new postgraduate qualification in the dance area (to
complement my existing teaching qualifications) and feel that my hourly rate
should reflect this.... my question is, how much should a dance
teacher with a postgraduate qualification charge?, and how is the best way
to approach asking for a raise if necessary?, bearing in mind the 'current
economic climate'!

DTOL member Ian de Souza (desouza@euro-dance-center.de)
from Germany responded to last week's item about the UK's "dance champion":
"Arlene will I am sure, do a fantastic job. She has done much to promote
dance. I did a show some years ago with Arlene on London's capital radio she
brings a lot of personality and enthusiasm into her work and when I knew
her, bags of energy and motivation.
It can only be a good thing.
Just wish we had this calibre of person in Europe!"

DTOL member Barbara Hunter (hunter.theatre.arts@hotmail.co.uk)
from Northumberland, UK would like to hear members' views on a situation:
"I thought I'd bring this matter to the attention of DTOL as I find myself
at a loss as to how to proceed.
I contacted some of the major dance associations with my concerns as to the
validity of qualifications claimed by a school that has recently set up in
my immediate area. The web page of the school in question states that all
staff are qualified with the RAD, ISTD, IDTA etc.
This has initiated a response from the ISTD stating that legally as one
teacher had taken a grade examination, she had an ISTD qualification and as
they have omitted the word teacher their statement is correct!
However in a full page newspaper advert the school has also stated "All of
our instructors are fully qualified". I ask how can anyone be fully
qualified and not have reached teacher status?
I just cannot believe that it's acceptable for anyone who has a grade exam
qualification, any level, to be able to say "ISTD qualified" as long as they
don't mention the word "Teacher".
I wonder why we are wasting time and money gaining qualification, not to
mention attending all those lectures to keep up to date, when we can just
claim we are fully qualified and get away with it!!
I feel It's time the Associations got their act together there is more to
running an association than collecting membership fees!
I would be grateful for any thoughts from other DTOL members."

THIS WEEK'S NEW DTOL MEMBERS
The reason for listing new members each week is to foster DTOL's community.
I hope that, from time to time, you will find a DTOL member in your area, or
who is teaching your specialism in another area, and you will want to make
contact with them, to share experiences. That's what DTOL's all about! But
the listing is also a "welcome" to the new members. Perhaps you can take a
minute this week to email one of these members to welcome them to DTOL.
The second line in each case is what each member says about themselves.
