CoursesCourses

Discipline and perseverance, the ability to pursue a training programme to an achievement level and to assert oneself and on the other hand to adjust and to co-operate, an alert reaction and development of concentration, a distinctive awareness of an inner and outer posture, mental and physical agility, the ability to give feelings expression and form and to interpret them, a sense of style and tact and last but not least of course, a healthy and aware relationship to one's own body and to physical well being in general .....

All these are positive advantages which let training in dancing (and especially in the demands of training in classical ballet) become fruitful in an individual life and also in social contact with others.

THE RUSSIAN BALLET SOCIETY (R.B.Soc.)

The Russian Ballet Society is the only society with an unbroken link from Nicolas Legat to the present time and has the remit to offer a complete training in the unique Legat System.

The aims of the Society are:  up.gif (1036 bytes)

  • to preserve and maintain the Russian Classical Ballet Style in its purity and tradition and the Legat System in its classical timelessness
  • to further develop it according to contemporary requirements with a view to the future.

The basis of this work is the Syllabus, established by Nadine Nicolaeva and Nicolas Legat in 1923 and since then constantly scrutinised by the Technical Sub-committee and revised where deemed necessary.

THE LEGAT SYSTEM   up.gif (1036 bytes)

This is a distinctive style of training producing a free flowing movement on a sound technique with intelligent inclusion of the musical form (rhythm/accent), and a differentiated consideration of the space perspective (epaulement). Clear and consistent in structure, the training by constantly changing movement sequences develops in the pupil or student a quite specific flexibility and quality of presentation.

As soon as basic technical requirements have been achieved, the available material of steps is put together in always varied combinations of movement so that the brain is stimulated and activated all the time. Legat's methodology prevents dull exercising and a certain automation and results in the greatest possible versatile and efficient body control.

THE SYLLABUS OF EXAMINATIONS   up.gif (1036 bytes)

The Russian Ballet Society offers a teaching and examination programme which reaches from the Preparatory and Primary grades to the Advanced and professional levels.

The Society offers also teaching qualifications in three stages:

  • Junior Teacher degree for instruction and teaching of Preparatory Grade to Grade IV (children's ballet level). Grade IV includes the introduction to Pointe Work
  • Intermediate Teacher degree for the teaching of Elementary and Intermediate levels
  • Senior Teacher degree for the teaching of the Advanced level and build up to stage (professional) level. This degree also incorporates a section on Character Dance.

Target groups for the teaching and examination programme of the R.B.Soc. are: up.gif (1036 bytes)

  1. Prospective dancers who want to reach a professional standard. For those students seriously considering a career as stage dancers, the Advanced and Soloist levels must be reached. (Ballerina/o level is optional but recommended if a career in classical ballet is desired)
  2. Those who do not wish to have a career in dance but may yet find fulfilment in instructing others (whether those "others" choose a stage or teaching career), the requirement for admission to the Teacher Training Programme being the dancer's Advanced certificate.
  3. Dancers who want to broaden their vocational field by teaching.
  4. Interested lay students and ballet amateurs who want by systematic training to gain qualifications or develop abilities which can be of use and advantage in other non-dancing fields of activity.
  5. Teachers already holding a qualification but interested in adapting to the distinctive Russian style must also follow an organised course of study. The length of study time and Course of Training will depend on the ability of the individual and on the time at their disposal to devote to the training programme.
